Kitesurfing in Sardinia, that windy island!

Kitesurfing in Sardinia Punta Trettu Porto Botte Cagliari Sardinia Kite Trip

After longtime we were planning to go in Morocco, at the last minute we changed idea and we decided to go to kitesurfing in Sardinia.

Kitesurfing in Sardinia in April: Kite Beaches of Punta Trettu, Porto Botte, Petrol Beach, Cagliari

Sardinia has been a destination for windsurfers for a long time, but you still don’t hear too much news about kitesurfing. After a research on internet, decided to go in the South of Sardinia to spend our kite week holiday.

We got a flight to Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, and rented a car.(in Sardinia is pretty recommended to have a car)).

Because the weather forecast services were prediction Mistral (wind from North-West), we decided to move to the West Coast of Sardinia. We drove to Sant’Antioco, which is the largest village in the area, in about one hour along almost empty roads.

Sant’Antioco is a nice village with many restaurants but not night life this period of the year. But we were in Sardinia to enjoy kitesurfing and not to enoy all the night!

The first 2 days we had kitesurf in Punta Trettu, that incredible place! Shallow and flat water almost everywere!

The third day, we moved to Porto Botte, at the south of Punta Trettu and of Sant’Antioco. Very good spot, beautiful nature, strong wind, water a little bit choppy.

The fourth day, the Mistral stopped. Asking information to the local kiters, we got advise that the thermal wind was blowing in Petrol Beach, close to Cagliari. Here we went! The wind was perfectly steady, around 16 knots.

The last 2 days, we went to kite at the fantastic Poetto Beach of Cagliari. In April, this beach is still empty and working well with the thermal wind and the Scirocco. Scirocco is wath we found the last 2 days of our fantastic trip in Sardinia. The first day at Poetto beach the wind was not so strong and the water was only a little bit choppy. The last day of our holiday the wind was strong and we got the chance to kite with our surf board! That incredible day!

Our kite Experience in the South of Sardinia

We had our trip in Sardinia at the beginning of April. Air temperature during the day was around 25˚C and the water temperature around 17˚C.

In our trip we found wind every day. We had kitesurf for 6 days out 6 with the winds of Mistral (north-West) and Sirocco (South-East). To find the wind we moved to different kite beaches with our car.

Generally wind pick up in the afternoon but the wind of Mistral and Sirocco can pick up even in the morning and can blow over 30 knots.

It is recommended to get service from some kite schools there in order to get the necessary support and advises on the winds.

Punta Trettu Kitesurf Paradise in Sardinia

Punta Trettu Kitesurf Paradise in Sardinia: flat hallow water Steady wind, perfect conditions for kitesurfing
Punta Trettu is a really fantastic and remote kite spot in Sardinia! Perfect for all levels of Kitesurf, i can say: “Punta Trettu Kitesurf Paradise”.

The kite Spot of Punta Trettu

I went to Punta Trettu last summer with all my family (all of us we are now kitesurfing) and we were amazed about this kite beach: Flat and shallow water, and incredible wind statistics with steady wind almost every day. The spot has a high exposure to the winds and you can kitesurf with the mistral, the sirocco and other winds. The thermal wind works very well during the spring and the summer: you should always consider 5 or 8 knots more as stated by windguru.

Kitesurf Paradise of Punta Trettu in Sardinia

The Kite spot of Punta Trettu is perfect for all levels, the water is flat everywhere and you can find a space with hundred meters of mirror-flat water even with a very strong wind. Beginners can learn without the pressure to have to swim against the waves. The advanced riders can practice their jumps and do tricks since the waves are not existing.

I recommend to wear rubber shoes because can be found big shells on the sandy backdrop of the spot

Punta Trettu Kitesurf Paradise, that is what I can say!. And I think there are not other places like this place in Europe.

Our Kitesurfing experience in Punta Trettu

All was perfect there in Punta Trettu!

We had always good wind and sunny days in Punta Trettu. Kitesurfing with those weather conditions was fantastic and lovely.

My doughtier started a beginner kite course and after few days she started to kite. For sure the conditions of the spot helped a lot but the instructors were always very good.

My son, as his is very young, leaned some kite piloting.

My wife an i alterate in our kitesurfing sessions… they were amazing!

The Kite School in Punta Trettu

In Punta Trettu we got the services from Kite Punta Trettu , a brnach of KiteGeneration.

The instructors are simply amazing, knowledgeable, concerned with safety, and they are really patient.

The team of the Kite Punta Trettu was very nice, funny and friendly. We felt like in a community and not in a business, and that is very important for us!

The material of the kite school is renews each year and that ensure a real good safety, that while kitesurfing is very important.

There is a kite & surf house-bar where you can relax and wait for the wind,  grab a snack, a coffee or a beer, and get to know each other. There are outdoor showers, bathrooms, and wireless.

From the kite & surf house-bar, you can walk to the kite spot in 5 minutes (be aware that is not allowed to kite everywhere: check this maps).

Here we have found an high quality ratio and the rates were cheaper than in all the other Countries we went previously.

Ouf final advise on Punta Trettu

If you are reading this post, probably you are going in Sardinia to Punta Trettu … and I am a bit envious 🙂 We definitely go back again!

In Sardinia to Learn Kitesurfing in Punta Trettu

Punta Trettu in Sardinia: Perfect kite beach for learning how to kitesurf! Learn Kitesurfing in Punta Trettu

Learning to kitesurf is easier as as it seems: to keep the kite stable at 12 o’clock while getting the feet into the kites is something multitasking and need some practice. The shallow and flat water of Kite Punta Trettu in Sardinia make easy to learn kitesurfing decreasing the learning curve normally required.

Several year ago, I got a windsurf as present. That summer I took to the water of the lac close to my city and from that moment I became a enthusiast of this sport mastering the water start, the jibe, the chop hop and enjoying all the moments of wind

Last year, in the month of May, I was in Cagliari where they were doing the Kite Foil European Champioships. It was amazing, people flying over the water with their foil kiteboard and kites. In that moment I decided to learn kitesurfing!I had a look on internet and I found KiteGeneration a very well reviewed kite school . After I sent an email, I got the reply immediately and I started my kite course for beginners few days later.
This school is changing the kite beach for lessons depending on wind conditions. During my kite course, it was blowing the wind of Mistral, one of the predominant wind in Sardinia.

The First Day of Kite Lessons at Poetto Beach in Cagliari

I started my first lesson at Poetto beach in Cagliari. In this first day of lessons, I have learned the basics of security, how to set up a typical modern kite, and after I practiced how to control the kite.

The Second Day of Kite Lessons in Punta Trettu, Sardinia

After the first day if kite lessons, I moved to Punta Trettu for the lessons in the water.

Punta Trettu, that amazing place! Located in the west coast of Sardinia, Punta Trettu, with flat shallow water, constant wind, no swimmers, is a perfect beach for kitesurfing. We can say that is Kite Paradise!

Although May, it was always sunny and the water warm enough (anyway, I used the wetsuit provided by the kite school).

The Third Day of Kite Lessons in Punta Trettu, Sardinia

Punta Trettu Sardinia Learn Kitesurfing in Punta Trettu
Sardinia – Learn Kitesurfing in Punta Trettu

In the water, I continued practicing to control the kite. It was not so easy fot me because my windsurfing instincts were hard to shake, and I often was pulling the bar too much! My instructor instructed me to control the kite with one hand and after some practice I got a good control of the kite. To make the kite fly in in the correct way is something really incredible and satisfying!

Kiteboarding combines two distinct skill groups:
  1. flying the kite,
  2. controlling the board.

After I learned to make the kite fly in the correct way, and after I learned the body drag and the relaunch of the kite from the water, it was the moment for me to try the board. I was expecting that, given my experience as windsurfer, manage the board it was something really easy. After some failed attempts to water-start, I realize that I was mistaken 🙂

The third day of Kite Lessons in Punta Trettu, Sardinia

The third day, the wind was blowing well as usual in Punta Trettu, and it was perfect to continue the water starts. We worked again on kite control and the body drag. It would skip some steps like this one, but for kitesurfing are necessary even some skills that are less than glamorous.

Progress was incredible and, even if for a few tens of meters, at the end of the day I started gliding on the water!

I really enjoyed the ride. The speed was effortless!

I will be back to Sardinia and Punta Trettu

Kiteboarding is something really exciting and fantastic, more than any other sport I’ve tried in my fife!

In three days, I accomplished what took me a lot of practice as a windsurfer. I’m not sure when my next kiteboarding adventure will take place, but I am sure I will back in Sardinia and Punta Trettu for kitesurfing again in this incredible place!

Kitesurfing Punta Trettu Sardinia, my Zero to Hero Kite Course
Kitesurfing Punta Trettu Sardinia, my Zero to Hero Kite Course

First of all, after I have learned to kitesurf, I can say that Learning to kitesurf is not so hard how it seems.

After long time I would like to start with kitesurfing,  I have attended a Kite Course just this year. As I was a completely beginner, I had a look on internet to find a easy and good spot for kitesurfing in one beautiful place in order to learn to kitesurf during my holidays. Kite Punta Trettu in Sardinia, here I went! In Punta Trettu I decided for the super Kite Center Kite Punta Trettu, part of KiteGeneration.

My Course in Punta Trettu: from Zero to Hero

After having a look at the proposed Beginner Kitesurfing Courses  I decided for the Zero to Hero Kite Course.

To be an independent kitesurfer it takes, for most of people, between 12 and 20 hours of kite lessons. But, a motivated person could go from zero to hero in less time.

The kite lessons I had in Punta Trettu were always great and easy, and I go up on the board in a very short time. I had lessons every day, the wind was blowing all the time (Punta Trettu have super wind statistics) and the sun shining every day.

The instructors

I changed instructor every day of lesson: Lucas, Mauro, Giorgio, Riccardo and Matias brought me to be an individual kitesurfer through the following steps learning to kitesurf.

My kite course

First I had to learn the proper kite theory and terminology so that your instructor could give me clear instructions. I learned how to set up the kite (it  is used to harness the power of the wind to glide on the water) and how to make it fly on the space. While kitesurfing, we always stand with our back to the wind facing the same direction as the wind and we stay in the center of the space where the kite can fly and get power : this space is called wind window.  Position of the kite in the wind window determines the power of the kite. The most powered position is when the kite is at 12:00 (directly in front of you), while the less powered positions are at 9 o’clock and 15 o’clock, exactly on our left or right.

The understanding of the wind window is the most important to know before to start to learn and practicing to control the kite, that takes more or less 5 hours.

After I got a good kite control, I moved up to the simulation of the water starts that means moving the kite through wind window to get the required power to let the kite lift us. This exercise were so important to understand where the power really is and how ito get the power, required for the water start.

After the simulation of the water start, I learned the Body Dragging, required in the water for safety reason and, when kite surfing,  to recover the board in case we lost it.

I completed all the above steps in more or less 7 hours. After that I started the real water start on the water with the board: sitting in the water with the board on, keeping the board near the water surface, moving the kite in the correct position into the power zone, I tried and tried until I was gliding on the water.

All was great: The spot of Punta Trettu, The instructors, the services and obviously the fabulous sport of kitesurfing!
